Bodies of some 400 Korean civilians were discovered in and around trenches dug in the prison yard of Taejon during the Korean War in September 1950. The victims were bound and slain by the retreating Communist forces of the North before the 24th US Division troops could recapture the city.

Witnesses said that the prisoners were forced to dig the trenches themselves.
